UP: Seven policemen hurt in stone pelting

Deoria (UP):

Seven policemen, including two sub-inspectors, were injured when an irate mob blocked traffic and indulged in stone pelting following the death of an accident victim here.

On getting information that Ravindra (29), who had suffered injuries after being hit by a motorcycle on October 18, had succumbed to his injuries, local residents on Friday blocked traffic on Ramjanki Road, Circle Officer Varun Mishra said on Saturday.

They placed the body on the road and indulged in heavy brickbatting, he said.

They also smashed windowpanes of the police vehicle and someone from among them snatched the gold chain of SI Amit Pandey, Mishra said.

He said an FIR had been lodged against over 250 people, 14 of which had been named in it.

Some people have been taken into custody for questioning, the police officer said, adding that the situation was now under control.

The injured were undergoing treatment in a hospital, he said.

A local-level BSP leader had also been named in the incident, police sources said.
