Pune:
Six labourers were killed and at least two injured after the wall of an educational institute collapsed on their makeshift shelters in Ambegaon area here, officials said Tuesday.
According to the fire brigade officials, the incident occurred around 11:45pm on Monday.
“The wall of Singhad Institute collapsed on the makeshift shelters of labourers in which six people were killed and two-three others injured,” an official said.
“The hutments were situated along the boundary wall of an under-construction site. Families of the labourers were staying in these makeshift shelters,” a Bharti Vidyapeeth police station official said.
District Collector Naval Kishore Ram said prima facie it seemed that a tree fell on the college wall and then they collapsed on the shanties.
He said an investigation was underway to ascertain to whom the under-construction site belonged.
Police identified the dead as Mamata Radheylal Patel (22), Radheylal Patel (25), Jethulal Patel (50), wife of Jethulal (45) (name not ascertained), Jitu Ravte and Pralhad Ravte.
An official said all the deceased are from Chattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.
The official added that a case of accidental death had been registered and probe was on to ascertain the ownership of the plot.
The incident comes a a few days after a wall collapse in Kondhwa area in which 15 people, including four children, were killed.
On Saturday, a portion of the compound wall of a housing society collapsed on shanties adjacent to it in the early hours of Saturday.
On Tuesday, Ram said after the Kondhwa incident, the district administration and civic body have ordered a detailed structural audit of all sites in and around Pune.
