Ramon Magsaysay awardee from Ladakh calls on Bedi

Ramon Magsaysay awardee Sonam Wangchuk from Ladakh called on Lt Governor Kiran Bedi at her office here on Wednesday.

A release from the Lt Governor said Wangchuk, founder of the Students Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL), which is working on educational reform in the trans-Himalayan region of Ladakh, has been instrumental in the launch of `Operation New Hope.`

According to the release, `Operation New Hope’ is a triangular collaboration of the government, village communities and civil society to bring in reforms in the government school system.

Bedi also said Wangchuk initiated in 2016 a project called `Farm Stays Ladakh, which provides tourists to stay with local families of Ladakh, run by mothers and middle aged women.

He was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award often referred to as the Asian version of the Nobel Prize for his contributions, she said.

Bedi presented some publications of Raj Nivas to him during the meeting.
