As many as 20 cows died after coming into contact with a live wire lying on the ground on Sunday morning in Sagar district of Madhya Pradesh, police said.

The incident occurred near Kadta village when the cows out for grazing in a forested area stepped on the power supply cable that got snapped from poles and lying on the ground, an official said.

Confirming the death of the 20 cows due to electrocution, Sagar superintendent of police Amit Sanghi said police the are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“Further action will be taken after investigation,” he said.

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition and local MLA Gopal Bhargava, who represents Rehli assembly constituency, has demanded compensation for owners of the deceased cows.

He also sought action against the officials concerned of Power department.
