Jammu:

A man has been arrested for allegedly impersonating as the Jammu regional transport officer (RTO), police said on Friday.

A complaint was lodged against Rakesh Singh on charges of duping Kulwant Singh of Rs 4 lakh by impersonating as the Jammu RTO, the police said.

Rakesh Singh contacted the complainant on mobile and lured them for availing a discretionary discount of the RTO for buying a new car. The complainant, who was planning to gift a car to his wife, fell into the trap, according to the police.

Acting on a tip-off, the accused, who was evading arrest for a month, was arrested by the crime branch. During an investigation, it came light that in one of bank accounts of Rakesh Singh, more than Rs 30 lakh was deposited in two years, the police said.

All this money has either been immediately been withdrawn or transferred to other accounts within a few hours by the accused, the police said.

Rakesh Singh has fifteen arrest warrants against him in different legal suits of cheating, the police added.
