Member of Parliament (MP) Meenakshi Lekhi has exhorted RWAs and market associations to take lead in putting a full stop in using different kind of plastic especially single use one.
By saying no to plastic we will, in fact, be expressing our commitment towards the mother earth. The plastic including single use plastic is not only harmful to the environment but also been affecting human beings, she added speaking at a function at Gk Part –I by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC). She administered a pledge against use of plastic, polythene and small water bottles and also inspire the family members, friends and others to stop single use plastic.
Lekhi expressed concern on indiscriminate use of plastic, drinking water single use bottles, thermocol plates, thermocol glasses and other plastic items being used in crowd feeding like bhandara and langars.
Former chairperson, standing committee, SDMC, and local councillor Shikha Roy, councillor Radhika Abrol, deputy commissioner Vishvwender, executive engineer, DEMS Rajiv jain and others were also present on the occasion.
The MP asked the market associations to not use polythene bags for handing over sold items and make use of paper, jute and clothe made bags. She reminded the days when bags made of clothes, jute and paper were being used by one and all.
She asked the RWAs to arrange collection of plastic waste from the houses and flats and hand it over to the employees of SDMC for proper disposal.
Lekhi also raised voiced against micro plastic domination in sanitary pads which has become harmful. She asked the manufacturers to prepare cloth made pads for the difficult days of women. She was the first to put her signature on a board expressing her commitment to stop using plastic for all times to come as use of plastic and other similar material may become cause of fatal diseases like cancer.
