Hathras rape case: Rahul, Priyanka taken into custody, stopped from visiting Hathras

Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who were on way to Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras to meet the family of the 19-year-old Dalit woman who died after allegedly being gang-raped, were detained by the police Thursday. Gandhi’s had begun a march to Hathras after their cars were stopped by authorities near Yamuna Expressway as Section 144 was in place.

Rahul alleged that the police lathicharged and pushed him to the ground. When Rahul asked why was he being stopped as he wanted to go to Hathras alone and not intending to violate Section 144, the police told him that they were arresting him under Section 188 IPC for violation of an order.

In other development, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the Uttar Pradesh government and the state’s police chief in connection with the Hathras rape. NHRC has taken suo motu cognisance in connection with the “gang rape and brutality of a 19-year-old women belonging to the Scheduled Caste in Hathras district”, the rights panel said in a statement.
