Oxybar to oxygen cylinders, Delhi'ites use different means to breathe 'fresh' air

New Delhi:

Aiming for a safer and greener alternative to mobility that would reduce the vehicular load of the city and connect residential areas with metro stations, DDA is working on a ‘Delhi Cyclewalk’, a dedicated corridor for pedestrians and cyclists.

Lt. Governor Anil Baijal on Wednesday chaired a meeting to discuss the project. The meeting was attended by VC, DDA, Engineer-in-Chief, PWD and other concerned officers.

A detailed presentation was made by DDA in this regard on The Delhi Cyclewalk. In phase-I, around 33km long corridor with four corridors connecting Tuglaqabad, GK, Nehru Place, Delhi Secretariat and other important destinations is planned.

This corridor would loop around the city of Delhi like a ring and connect metro stations, bus stands, high density residential areas, business districts, industrial districts, recreational districts, educational districts, master plan greens and make Delhi a “city of connected forests and lakes”. The objective is to reduce millions vehicle rides the Delhi roads and allow people to walk and cycle safely and joyfully to work, to study, to shop and to stay fit.

“It will be a safer and greener alternative to mobility that would reduce the vehicular load of the city, provide last mile connectivity, and connect residential areas with metro stations and bus stands. It would also allow citizens to save money on the last mile commute which currently is the most expensive per km charge of the journey.

“To ensure convenient access, Origin and Destination points have been mapped. All the Origin – Destination plazas are propose to be interlinked to each other by the tracks for cycling and walking. Both on grade and elevated tracks shall have greens all along the length to soften the edges,” reads a statement released by the Raj Niwas.

At a few places where Master plan greens do not abut residential origination points or destination points, and to connect the broken fabric, elevated tracks will be planned alongside master plan roads. No trees would be disturbed and the track would meander around the existing trees, added the statement.

“Additionally, because of connectivity to metro stations, bus stations and the rent- a -bike option, the whole ecosystem becomes convenient and can effectively fulfill the desire lines from point of Origination to the point of destination,” it asserts.

LG advised VC, DDA to take help of experts, ASI and Forest Department to detail out the project and prepare for execution.
