Indore:
Former Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said on Friday that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) cannot be revoked just because of the ongoing protests against it.
She also said that state governments cannot refuse to implement any special law framed by the Centre.
“The ongoing anti-CAA protests are totally wrong and law cannot be scrapped on the basis of it,” Mahajan said while addressing a BJP meeting.
“If anti-CAA protesters find anything wrong in the law, then they can always move the Supreme Court over the issue. The decision of the apex court will be acceptable to all. But the political leaders’ act of instigating people against the CAA is completely wrong,” she added.
She said that the CAA has been brought by the government, which was elected by the people with two-thirds majority.
“As per the constitutional provisions, state governments cannot say that they can’t implement any special law framed by the Centre,” she said.
Mahajan also criticised Rajgarh district collector Nidhi Nivedita and another woman official for allegedly slapping BJP workers during an anti-CAA protest in Biaora town last Sunday.
Dubbing their act as “inappropriate”, she said, “The country’s women are joining the armed forces to fight the enemy, but they should not become ‘Jhansi ki Rani’ everywhere.
